c.1887 Handyman Special Historic Farm House For Sale W/Barn on 3 Acres
History
Historic Butts family homestead has been in one family for generations. First time offered ever! Butts Corners was an important cross roads in the 19th century when the house, barn and Carriage Manufactory (now privately owned) were established just after the Civil war. An older frame house was razed in 1887 when the current house was completed.
Construction
The large post and beam barn is a masterpiece of 19th century engineering and construction. This building remains in remarkable condition, still straight and true with hand wrought strap hinges on the doors and a completely hand pegged frame. Both hand hewn and milled lumber were used in the barns construction. The house is a simple three over three room design in a T form with central stair. There are high ceilings on both floors and a full deep basement under all. The hemlock frame of the house remains in excellent condition and few changes have been made since 1887 when the house was finished. Extensive records from the building of this house have remained in the family. These include invoices for hardware, plaster, window sashes etc. An architect from Binghamton was engaged to design the house. This important ephemra is available for review.
More
Suitable for a family home, in home business or business only use, the Butts Homestead offers many opportunities at a very busy Delaware County intersection. The barn could easily be reinterpreted as a dynamic commercial space comprising about 4000 square feet on three floors. The lot around the house and barn is open and level with plenty of frontage on state highway 23 and Butts Corners Rd.
